Vintage 1970s Ercol Windsor Model 455 Sideboard

The largest of Ercol’s sideboards, the Windsor model 455 is low and long, compared to the more common 468. Still made today, such is its enduring popularity, the vintage ones come with more character and a richer grain in our view. Plus they’re a good deal cheaper – a newly made Ercol sideboard is over £3500! Production of this design started in 1961, although we believe this one to date from the early 1970s. It’s beautifully made in solid English elm with many of Ercol’s signature details – the oval inset handles, the on-show dovetail joints, the castors. The three central drawers are flanked by two generous cupboards, each with an adjustable shelf inside. The top drawer has an additional large cutlery tray which can be removed. We’ve rejuvenated rather than restored this particular piece, primarily because it’s in such great shape. Where the condition overall is good, we like to keep the original factory finish. A classic vintage piece at a great price too.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out, applying a natural wax polish to the exterior surfaces to revive its shine but otherwise the finish is all original. All hinges and closures are in good working order. The two cupboards each have an adjustable shelf inside along with the original shelf pegs. The interiors are in good, clean order. The three drawers are very nicely made, slide easily and have clean interiors too. The top drawer houses a removable cutlery trays also in very good order. The sideboard sits on its original castors which move freely. There are some minor superficial blemishes, scuffs and marks on the exterior wood surfaces primarily on the sideboard top, which we have shown in our photos. Overall we would class wear and tear of this nature as ‘light’ and not enough in our view to warrant restoration, although you could opt to do this. There has been a small knock to the back left corner at some point. Although not really visible we have stabilised it to ensure there is no movement – do refer to our photo. It’s a beautifully crafted piece as you would expect from Ercol in solid wood. Sadly the original Ercol label is no longer in place but it dates from the 1970s.
