Vintage 1970s Compact Teak Bureau with Bi-fold Doors

As midcentury bureaus go, this is about as neat and compact as you could find. And yet, it gives you generous enough desk and cupboard storage below so although the dimensions are tidy, it doesn’t compromise on practicality or retro good looks for that matter. Bureaus like this have enjoyed a renaissance in recent years with working-from-home days commonplace for many. Where a home might not have a separate office or room for a conventional desk, bureaus create compact work stations which can be closed at the end of the day. Ones like this are especially good for student bedrooms

Description

This original, vintage bureau is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good, used condition. The piece has been cleaned, inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed on the external surfaces, but otherwise the finish is original. The lower cupboard features a bi-fold door and inside is a fixed shelf. The interior is clean and tidy and all handles, hinges and closures are in good, working order. The upper fall door creates the desk when down. Inside are fixed pigeon holes and vinyl covered writing mat. The bureau was missing a hinge / arm when acquired and we have been unable to source one exactly the same as the original. In fact it’s been difficult to source any hinges the right size for such a small bureau so the work-around has been to have a hinge fold in the opposite way on one side! Please see our photo showing this. This doesn’t impact the function or stability of the bureau or desk in anyway, nor is it apparent when the desk is down and the hinge arm extended. There are also some discreet filled screw holes within the top section as a result of these hinge modifications. Again, we have shown this in our photos and this is reflected in our price.  There are light marks and scuffs here and there on the exterior wood surfaces, minor signs of use in line with its age – we’ve shown some in our photos. In the overall context of the piece, they are not very noticeable. It’s a nicely made piece of furniture with no areas of concern. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but this is a midcentury original and most likely dates from the 1970s.
