Striking British Vintage 1960s Armchair in Silky Patterned Fabric

It’s not often we make an exception for vintage lounge chairs with fabric upholstery rather than leather but this one’s something special. The design is really striking, cutting a sharp-lined silhouette from every side. There are angles, sharps lines, contours and curves butting up against each other at every point. And yet it’s a welcoming seat with open arms and an inviting presence – you want to run your hands over its surfaces. It’s clearly been restored in recent times because the statement upholstery is in outstanding order. This would have required the skills an experienced upholsterer, such is the complex design of the frame and upholstery. The high sheen fabric features a subtle, ostrich feather repeat pattern in a dark gold and grey. It’s very beautiful and has an iridescent quality to it when it catches the light. We believe the fabric would’ve been expensive, quite possible silk or a silk blend but we can’t say for sure. A statement midcentury chair that  would be at home in any room. Do take a moment to browse our photos to see it in its glory.

Description

This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have given the chair a thorough check and vacuum, applying a natural beeswax polish to the wooden legs. The upholstery is outstanding. It’s clearly been professionally recovered in recent years as it looks near immaculate. This would’ve been an expensive piece to upholster as the frame shape and detailing on this particular chair are complex and an experienced, skilled upholsterer did a magnificent job bringing it back to life. The seat cushion is separate, double-sided, has a plump inner and working zip. The back cushion gives the illusion of being separate but it’s actually fixed to the frame. All buttons are securely in place. The fixed upholstery including the piping is in very good order, hugging the lines of the frame perfectly. There are no marks or areas of concern on the fabric – it’s a high sheen, iridescent weave featuring an ostrich feather repeat motif in grey and dark gold. We don’t know the composition of the fabric but it’s shiny and clearly very hardwearing, quite possibly silk. There are one or two minor scuffs on the wooden legs. Upended you can see the original springs underneath and some of the frame construction. It’s very well crafted and of a high-end quality. We believe this chair dates from the 1960s. There is no maker’s mark on the frame and despite its striking design, we’ve been unable to attribute it.
