Smart Vintage 1960s Teak Bureau by Elliots of Newbury

Neat, efficient vintage bureaus come with considerable charm and these days they’re having something of a renaissance with increased demands for home-working. Less space-consuming than a conventional desk, they can be closed when the working day is done. Bureaus are also great options for kids’ / teenagers’ rooms to help them get organised with a dedicated work station. This 1960’s teak bureau from renowned British furniture maker, Elliot’s of Newbury, is a beauty and ticks all the boxes for Scandinavian-inspired good looks and original design details – we love that drawer front – along with practicality. With a double cupboard below and further storage in the top desk,  there is masses of storage. And the wood grain on the door fronts is simply stunning.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural wax polish applied to the external wood. The drawer slides with ease, features dovetail joints and has a clean, tidy interior. The top desk section features pigeon holes and again, it’s in good clean, tidy order throughout and the hinges for the pull down door are in good working order too. Originally there were two plastic caps on either side of the small ledge so that when the desk door was down and leant on, the wood would be protected. This plastic had broken off so we have added two small, discreet felt squares. Please refer to our photos to see these. The double cupboard below is in good order inside. There is a small chip to the back left corner of the piece. As this is set against a wall, it’s not particularly visible but this is shown in a photo. There are some very minor, superficial marks and knocks to the exterior wood surfaces but overall it is in very good condition. It’s very well put together, solid and stable including when the pull-down desk in place. Note: we have added felt floor protectors to the feet which can be seen in our photos – these can be easily taken off if they don’t suit. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we know this to be made by Elliots of Newbury and date from the 1960s as it’s a well-documented piece with a signature drawer design.
