Smart 1950s Vintage Ex-military Light Oak Chest of Drawers

At around 70 years old, this large, ex-military vintage chest of drawers must have seen some action! Originally commissioned for bases and barracks, it’s rather utilitarian in design, unfussy and no-nonsense, but it retains considerable old-fashioned charm and of course, provides masses of practical storage with five graduated drawers. As you might expect with furniture of this nature, it’s extremely well-made in solid light oak throughout with faultless dovetail joints and generous pull handles. And the golden, honey-toned patina of the oak grain is neutral enough to work well alongside other woods and colour schemes. A wonderful piece of heritage and history, as well as practical for the modern home.

Description

This is an original, used chest of drawers that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in good vintage condition for its years. The piece has been cleaned inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise the original finish has been left alone. All five drawers slide with ease on their runners and are well-made with dovetail joints. The right side top drawer had a sticky spill on the base which we’ve cleaned away but the light stain remains, as shown. The remaining drawers are lightly marked inside with use but nothing to flag. The top carries the brunt of wear and tear on the exterior with knocks, some faded patches, light ring marks as we’ve shown in our photos. There is a minor knock on the top edge of the drawers that has been filled which is also shown.  All in all though, the marks and scuffs are in line with its age and function and in the context of the whole piece aren’t particularly noticeable – please do view our photos for a good sense of the finish, condition and colour. It’s particularly well-made, solid and sturdy.
