Rare Midcentury 1960s Large Desk by White & Newton

A seldom seen piece from British midcentury furniture maker, White & Newton, this long desk was part of a short-production range designed by Arthur Edwards and it dates from the early sixties. It was formally a vanity table but the mirror that once screwed to the back is long gone, as is often the way. No matter though because it serves just as well as a very handsome, wide but shallow-in-depth, pedestal desk. Ideal for someone who works from a laptop which increasingly is most people in their home setting. It comes with a generous leg area to tuck in a chair and there are six drawers in total so plentiful store space.  The design is classic MCM with crisp lines and sharp angles accentuated by the shadow gap detail across the drawer fronts and the minimalist steel handles.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. It has been checked, cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is all original. There are six drawers (the lower drawers on either side are actually double height) which slide with ease, are beautifully made with their original polished steel handles securely attached and they have clean, tidy interiors with just light marks. Overall, there is minor wear and tear to the exterior wood surfaces in line with the piece’s age. Do browse our images to get an accurate sense of its super condition. It is very well-made, solid and stable with no areas of concern. There is no maker’s mark in place but it was acquired as part of a matching suite of other White & Newton pieces so we attribute with 100% confidence.
