Midcentury 1970s Danish Teak Tiled Dining Table by Ansager Mobler

Made by Danish furniture maker, Ansanger Møbler (AM Mobler) in the late 1960s / early 1970s and with a striking central panel of ceramic tiles, this is a grand, statement dining table. It has a rather Brutalist, stark design, particularly so the legs, but this is to allow the ceramic centrepiece to be the main attraction. It’s made in teak and the warm tones and grain of the wood complement the browns and  oranges in the tiles perfectly.  The tiles themselves feature fern leaf motif and, and the tile maker’s signature stamp, GG, can be seen incorporated into one. And of course, a substantial tiled section is extremely practical as dining tables take a great deal of wear and tear. The tiles mitigate this, providing space for warmed dishes as you dine. It’s a large table at over 1.6m in its most compact mode, and could seat six. The end extension leaves can be used independently, sizing it up to seat eight, ten or more, depending on the size of dining chairs. With its robust, solid construction, it would make an excellent, high-use family dining table in a busy modern home. Please read our condition report regarding a handy modification, Karl’s made to the leaves in case you would like to remove them.

Description

This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition with a hinge modification to the extension leaves. Originally, the two leaves were designed to simply hang down when not in use, as shown in our photos, extending when required by lifting them and pulling out integral wooden bars underneath for them to rest on. These days, the leaves are more often than not removed as by leaving them to hang down, you are restricting the number you can sit around the table as no one can tuck in and be seated at either end. We have restored the table so it can be as originally designed / intended, with the two leaves in place, but Karl has added discreet modified hinges with pull-pins so you can opt to remove one or both of the leaves entirely. Please refer to our various photos to get a sense of this modification. The wood and tiles have been thoroughly cleaned and the top table surface has been restored with the wooden border areas gently sanded back and a hard-wearing wax finish then polish applied. There are superficial dents, marks and scuffs to the wood from use on the edges, frame and the legs but this is in line with its age and function. They don’t detract from its appeal. The central tiled section is in excellent order with no chips and no degradation to the grout. The table is very sturdy and solid – it’s a really heavy piece! – with no wobbles or repairs. The AM Made in Denmark stamp can be seen on the underside of the table. Please refer to our photos for a good sense of the condition of this piece.
