Vintage Military Campaign-style Mahogany Davenport Desk Chest

Despite its antique good looks, we don’t know that this unique, little piece is wildly old – we suspect it’s a midcentury imitation of an original campaign-style chest and perhaps dates from somewhere in the 1970s. We just can’t definitively say. Regardless though, it’s very well-made indeed in solid mahogany so a premium quality Davenport desk with lots of superb features and attentions to detail. Unlock the top and it folds forward to create a writing slope. There are pen drawers and yellow, gold edged leather inlays for comfortable working. And these leather panels cleverly lift up to reveal two secret compartments beneath, one large enough to tuck away a small laptop in. There are three graduated drawers providing further storage below. With brass capped corners and side handles, the design nods to a military past and a bygone era. This would be a cracking piece for a young person’s room where they need a space to study. Equally it’s a wonderfully bohemian and eclectic piece for any room. We love it.

Description

This original, vintage chest is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good, used condition. The piece has been checked and cleaned, inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed on the external surfaces, but otherwise the finish is original. The front folds out to create a writing slope with two sections that are leather inlaid. The yellow leather panels have been cleaned and are a little aged and marked with use as shown in our photos but they are securely affixed and in good order. In the top section there are also two miniature pen drawers, along with two hidden compartments beneath the leather panels. There are discreet leather tags to access these areas. There is a working lock and key for the desk section. Below are three graduated drawers, each with brass inset handles. The drawers are in very good order, well-made with clean interiors. All hinges and handles are in very good working order. There are brass corners in place, again securely attached, lightly tarnished and in good order, as well has handles on each side to carry the piece. The external wood surfaces carry minor dents, blemishes and scuffs in line with its age and function. This can be seen across our photos. It’s a very well made piece of furniture that’s solid and sturdy with no areas of concern. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we believe it to be British in origin, most likely dating from the 1970s.
