Vintage West African Carved Grebo Face Mask

How about this for a ‘talking point’ piece! It’s a hand-carved, painted wooden Grebo face mask. Stylised and geometric with abstract facial features, these decorative objects are characterised by their tubular eyes, their long sharp noses and their box mouths. They are tribal masks from West Africa, this one from Liberia specifically, and are highly collectable as interesting, historical decorative objects. They can be rested on the ground (this one isn’t freestanding so leans against the wall) or it could be wall-mounted. It comes with painted details in blue and white. Such pieces were a huge influence on 20th century modern art including cubism. Picasso purchased a Grebo mask early 20th century and it’s not difficult to see the connection with his abstract paintings. We love that this early 20th century mask still has the remnants of the ribbons on either side and there are further faces on the sides.
