Vintage 1970s Ladderax Double Bay Freestanding Modular Shelf System

Truly versatile pieces of furniture, British maker, Staples Ladderax, made modular storage systems, incorporating shelves, bookcases, drawers, cabinets and more. These different elements can be configured to suit, be added to our streamlined. This is a multi-functional, freestanding double bay, compromised of a drinks cabinet, drawer chest, shelves and two bookcases so lots going on! Metal rods moor the units and shelves into position underneath and hang onto the ‘rungs’ of the ladder uprights, a very clever piece of design engineering that’s strong and stable. This is particular system with the wooden ladder uprights dates from the 1970s and we love that it’s the freestanding model, rather than wall-leaning. We love too that it’s with the more slimline components, rather than the more commonly seen wider units. Ladderax took inspiration from Danish modular furniture and this piece of classic, vintage furniture would work in any room.

Description

This is an original, vintage modular piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been checked, cleaned and wood buffed with a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original. The full inventory for this modular shelving system is:

The fall-door drinks cabinet is in good, clean order inside. There is a fixed, cutaway shelf and a working lock and key. The three drawer cabinet also has a working lock and key. The drawers are well-made, slide easily and have clean interiors. The two bookcases have sliding doors that move easily in their runners. Each features an adjustable glass shelf and both have interiors in very good order. There are four further open shelves in good order. All hinges, handles and closures are in good order. The two freestanding (when assembled) ladder uprights are in good – very good condition. There are some light marks, blemishes and scuffs here and there  – please refer to our photos for a good sense of this. We feel this wear and tear is minimal and in line with this item’s age and function. Sadly the maker’s label isn’t affixed anymore but this is well-documented furniture that we know to be Staples Ladderax. The nature of this modular system means it can be configured in all manner of ways – we would recommend that there are two people on hand during assembly.
