Elegant Vintage 1960s Meredew Dresser Sideboard

We love furniture that straddles classic midcentury and more traditional, conservative design – and this large dresser / sideboard is a fine example of that. Made by British furniture manufacturer, Meredew, and dating from the 1960s, it’s beautifully made and particularly elegant in style with long lines and slender, brass-capped legs. Following a careful, non-invasive restoration of its exterior surfaces, the striped wood patina really pops. It’s vibrant and rich, and the placement of the grain, mixing horizontal and vertical, serves to accentuate the slimline, lean design. Originally there would have been a back mirror and it was intended for the bedroom but actually it’s more versatile without. With six drawers it could of course still be really useful for clothes or as a vanity stand upstairs but in our view it would serve much better in the modern home as a sideboard in the sitting room or in an open living space, or as a credenza in an entrance hall.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out. The exterior surfaces – the top, sides and drawer fronts – have been restored. This involved careful removal of the old finish, oil and then a wax polish. As part of this restoration there is a small fix to a chip on the bottom corner of the lower left drawer as shown in our photos. The six drawers are well-made, slide easily on their runners, have securely attached original, brass pull handles and have clean, tidy interiors. Some of the handles are lightly tarnished with age but this rather adds to the piece’s vintage charm in our view. There are very light scuffs and knocks on the external wood, but following restoration these are minimal. The original brass capped feet are in place (note: you can see our felt floor protectors in some of the photos. These are simply stuck on and can be easily removed). Sadly no Meredew label but this is an easily verified and attributed design of theirs. It’s stable and solid, well-made and with no signs of repair, and dates from the 1960s.
