Rare Vintage 1960s Extending Dining Table by Peter Hayward for Vanson

This is a truly magnificent midcentury table and a first for us at Original Homewares – we’ve never come across this Vanson model before. It’s expertly crafted in top quality teak and with squared off legs. It dates from the 1960s and was designed by Peter Hayward for renowned furniture maker, Vanson. As a designer Hayward was sought after and highly regarded, designing for many of the major British midcentury brands from Greaves & Thomas to Uniflex to Heals. What makes this particular table stand out from others are the thoughtful, understated design details. The deeply bevelled edge that borders the whole table top and the curved sides and ends that soften this otherwise substantial, rectangular piece. The extension section resides underneath the main table and when in position, it adds significantly to its width, taking it to over 2.1m.  It can readily accommodate six-eight diners. The table top has been carefully restored bringing its fine grain back to life and this table is ready for service for another 60 years.

Description

This original, vintage dining table is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in very good, used condition. The table has been checked, cleaned and table top and extension section have been restored. This involved carefully stripping away the original finish, followed by oil and wax for a durable, consistent finish. The table border / base and legs have been buffed with a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original here. The extension is housed underneath the table and is accessed by pulling the two table halves apart. It’s then inserted into the gap and the two sides pushed back together to create a seamless table top. All mechanisms are in good working order. The extension is a touch darker than the two sides, a common issue with vintage tables. It’s simply because it’s been used less and hasn’t been as exposed to sunlight so hasn’t faded and worn in quite the same way. Overall, the table is in very good order with just minor signs of use. It’s a very well-made piece that’s weighty, solid and sturdy. The Vanson label can be seen underneath.
