Vintage 1960s Elliotts of Newbury Writing Desk / Bureau

Neat, efficient vintage bureaus have become popular again in recent years with increased demands for home-working. Less space-consuming than a conventional desk, they can be closed when the working day is done. Bureaus are also great options for kid or student rooms to help them get organised with a dedicated work station. This 1960’s teak bureau from renowned British furniture maker, Elliotts of Newbury, is a beauty and comes with great provenance, designed by Richard Hornby. It ticks all the boxes for Scandinavian-inspired good looks and original design details – we love the reeded drawer front – along with practicality. With a drawer and a double door cupboard below and further storage and pigeon holes in the top section, there is a mass of storage, perfect for staying organised and focused.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural wax polish applied to the external wood. The drawer slides with ease and has a clean, tidy interior. The top desk section featured pigeon holes and again, it’s in good clean, tidy order throughout. The hinges for the pull-down door / desk are in good working order too. There are some minor scuffs, sunlight fading and knocks to the exterior wood surfaces – please refer to our photos which give an accurate sense of its condition. There were originally two caps on either side of the small ledge so when the desk door is down and lent on, the wood is protected. These have been removed at some point, leaving a small mark but it doesn’t affect the function of the desk in anyway. It’s very well made, solid and stable. The Elliotts of Newbury label is no longer in place but it’s a well-documents piece so we attribute it with confidence and dates from the 1960s.
