Vintage 1950s Walnut & Beech Sideboard

Here is one of those British midcentury pieces whose design bridges post-war practicality and the emerging, exciting home decor movement of the midcentury. This sideboard’s looks and features are both traditional and modernist at the same time. Expertly crafted in a mix of dark, striped walnut on the fronts, top and side; and blond beech on the trim to create frames and accents, the colour contrast is used to striking effect. Taller than the archetypal, low and lean, MCM sideboards that came later, it delivers a huge amount of storage across deep drawers and cupboards. But the thing we love the most is the slimline display shelf on the top, a quirky feature that sets this sideboard apart.

Description

This original, vintage sideboard is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good, used condition. The piece has been cleaned, inside and out, and the top surface has been stripped, lightly sanded and varnished to remove imperfections and make it consistent with the rest of the piece. The three, centred, deep drawers are beautifully made with angled fronts, dovetail joints and they slide with ease. The lower two are lightly marked inside through use and the top drawer is lined and sectioned, intended for cutlery. The green baize is a little marked here and there as shown. Both side cupboards have secure hinges and original wooden handles, and closures in good working order.  The left cupboard has a fixed recessed shelf, intended for bottles at the front and you can see it was used for this as there are numerous ring mark stains. The right cupboard features a deeper fixed shelf. There is a further feature shelf on top of the sideboard. This could be easily unscrewed for a more stream-lined look. Commensurate with its age, there are signs of wear and tear both inside and out – superficial dents, chips and scuffs here and there, which can be seen in our photos. When acquired, there was some kind of resin marking the top surface. Our partial restoration as removed all but one area, although it’s now faint and smooth – please see our image of this. Overall this sideboard is beautifully crafted, thoughtfully designed and very solid. Sadly we’ve been unable to identify the maker but we date it to the early 1950s. Do browse our photos for a good sense of its condition. If you have any questions or would like to view this piece, just get in touch.
