Large Midcentury White & Newton Extending Teak Dining Table
This grand table with generous, extending proportions is perfect for assembling friends and family around. British-made by renowned furniture maker, White & Newton, in teak, it dates from the late 1960s and it’s been well loved as its in superb condition. It’s unusual in that its extension is so large – at full length it’s over 2.1m. It could comfortably seat up to 8 – 10 people depending on chair size. And yet in regular mode, it’s a ‘standard’ size dining table so this is a great option for homes that like to entertain but don’t have the space for a permanent big table. The extension is integrated into the centre of the table. Pull the two sides apart and with a clever, rotating mechanism, an extra section is added. The teak is in fantastic order with rich, golden tones and patination. We love the robust, substantial design of this table very much, especially the cylindrical legs and the chunky table edges. It’s a lovely change to the usual midcentury features we see in dining tables.
This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural wax polish applied to the external wood. There is a rectangle of sunlight fading to the finish in the middle section of the table top – this can be seen on our photos. The two side pull apart (this is best done with two people) to reveal the extension integrated and stowed inside. With a simple rotation, this folds out and flattens, securing in place with a clasp. The two halves are then pushed back. The mechanism and runners are all in very good working order. There are very minor marks and surface scratches here and there on the table top but nothing to flag. As is often the way, the extension is a touch darker than the two side leaves quite simply because it’s been used less and hadn’t faded at the same rate. The veneer has lifted a little on the underside of the extension section which we have shown in a photo but this has no bearing on the overall use / look as it’s not seen under the table. The legs also carry just light wear and tear with nothing specific to call out. This dining table has been well cared for. It’s very well made, solid and stable. It’s a heavy, substantial piece. The White & Newton maker’s label can be seen on the extending section. Please do browse our photos for an accurate sense of its excellent order. Note: we’ve added felt floor protectors to the feet which you can see in our photos – they can be easily removed if not required.
