Vintage 1950s Stag C Range Walnut Dressing Table by John & Sylvia Reid

Looking both midcentury and contemporary at the same time, this compact dressing table / vanity desk has quite the history. Designed by power duo, John and Sylvia Reid for Stag in the 1950s, this is from their highly regarded C range. The dark Australian walnut makes a refreshing change from usual light oak of the C range, and the rich grain is striking across the exterior surfaces. The overall design is refined, clean-lined and minimalist with long, lower recessed handles. We love the black trim framing the front, echoed in the drawer handle insets and tapered legs. It creates a subtle note of distinction. Plentiful storage across four drawers along with a full width mirror and an area to sit and preen yourself, this is a super piece of timeless midcentury design with great provenance that will mix and match with other furniture. We have an accompanying chest of drawers available. If you are interested in both, please get in touch for a discounted price.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have cleaned the piece inside and out, and exterior surfaces have been restored. This involved carefully stripping back the original finish, oil and then wax polish. We have also sprayed the trim and inset drawer handles as to restore it to its original matt black glory. The three left hand drawers are constructed with dovetail joints, integral handles and they slide with ease. They have clean interiors. There is a further hidden drawer at the dressing table as shown. This has a clean interior too and slides back and forth easily but there is a little jiggle needed to close it fully. There is no repair or fault to report here – it’s just that the drawer runners have worn a little with age and use. It’s a very minor detail to flag but we wanted to be transparent nonetheless. The exterior surfaces are in very good order, following their restoration, but there are light signs of wear and tear in line with the item’s considerable age and as you would expect. The mirror can be removed entirely by unscrewing the back uprights. The mirror can be angled but the mechanisms are little loose through use.
