Stunning Vintage 1960s AH McIntosh of Kirkcaldy Tall Teak Drinks Cabinet

Designed during the 1960s by Tom Robertson for AH McIntosh of Kirkcaldy, this is a very fine, handsome, tall drinks cabinet that uses the honey-toned teak wood grain to great effect. It features a great deal of storage with a generous, double-door upper cupboard with shelves and two slimline drawers below. Sitting on long legs, the space this creates makes this large piece of furniture more elegant and yet it’s a expertly balanced, very thoughtful piece of design. Take in the subtle, inlaid chequered drawer fronts – just stunning. This is a coveted, highly prized find with history and provenance, but it arrived with us with issues so please do read on to our detailed condition report. Although not perfect, it is nonetheless an outstanding piece of British furniture that straddles both more traditional post-war design and the Scandinavian mid century aesthetic perfectly. We can detect some Arts & Crafts influence here too.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in fair, used condition and has undergone a considerable amount of remedial work. When we acquired this piece it had already been subjected to a poor quality, amateur restoration. The top had been carelessly sanded back, probably to remove a mark, but this went through the veneer – a small patch (approx. 15mm) which is visible in the photo of the top. In addition to this, the right hand side of the cabinet has been completely (and badly!) re-veneered. It hadn’t adhered properly at the top back corner which has resulted in some warping, and there are further chips to the bottom edge of this side, again where the reapplied veneer hasn’t been attached and finished professionally at the edge. This is shown in our photos. Finally the whole cabinet had been stained a very dark colour, we believe to emulate the rosewood version of this particular piece. We have meticulously and very carefully stripped back the whole piece, secured the loose veneer, and treated with a specialist teak furniture oil and professional quality beeswax polish. Inside there a a few holes where door clasps have been added/removed, these have been filled and coloured. Finally there is a crack in one of the fixed shelves (left hand side, top shelf), however this damage seems to be just cosmetic, doesn’t run to the back and doesn’t affect the strength or functionality of the shelf. For all of these points, it’s still an outstanding piece of furniture in its design and function, and viewed overall, the issues pale into the background as they are not hugely noticeable. The two lower drawers slide with each, are made with dovetail joints and are both felt lined. The left-handed drawer is sectioned with removeable slats for cutlery. Their fronts feature a stunning chequered wood effect in super condition. The cupboard doors also have a beautiful grain and are in great order with working closures. The shelves inside are fixed. It’s very well-crafted, solid and stable and the maker’s plate can be seen inside the cupboard door.
