Early 1960s Stag Fineline Chest of Drawers by John & Sylvia Reid

Instantly recognisable from Stag’s highly desirable Fineline range, this smart, two-over-two chest of drawers has been carefully restored to make that amazing pencil-striped grain glow. Designed by power duo, John and Sylvia Reid, the Fineline collection was only made for a short period between 1960 – 1963. It was rather ahead of its time in our view. Obviously Scandinavian-inspired, its minimalist design, tubular metal legs and the signature black bar along the bottom give it an industrial feel. Despite being nearly 60 years old, it looks really fresh and contemporary. A design classic.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned the sideboard inside and out, and the exterior wood surfaces have been fully restored. This process involved the stripping and sanding off the original, worn finish, followed by layers of hard wax Osmo oil and finished with Gilboy’s all natural polish for a durable finish. As you can see in our photos, finely striped grain have been brought back to life with this careful, non-invasive restoration. There are some areas of wear to flag. The two front corners are a little rounded where someone had tried to restore the top surface in the past. And on the right hand side bottom edge, there were some veneer chips which we have secured and filled. Please refer to our photos. Overall though we would categorise this as light wear and tear in line with its considerable age. The four drawers – two over two – all slide with ease and have clean, tidy interiors. This is a very well-made piece in teak and teak veneer. Sadly there is no Stag maker’s mark but this is a well-documented piece and range which we attribute with confidence.
