Set of Six Midcentury 1960s Fyne Ladye for Heals Dining Chairs by Richard Hornby
- An outstanding set of six midcentury dining chairs designed by Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye Furniture, Banbury, at some point in the late 1950s – early 1960s, and retailed through Heals. They are made in solid Afromosia, a dark African hardwood, similar to teak and not used so much beyond the mid sixties when it became rather too expensive to import. This set includes one carver and we love the wide welcome of the arms on this chair, perfect for the head of the table. The contoured back, tall seat height and generous seat width make these ideal for those who love a slow-eating, long dinner party. The green vinyl upholstery is original and in remarkable condition considering its years with no tears or areas of wear to note. Should you choose to update them, this would be an easy job as they simply drop into the frame. The overall design is slim and elegant, perhaps more traditional and refined than some of its British mid century contemporaries.

This sale is for a set of six dining chairs, five regular and one carver. These are original, vintage dining chairs that are ‘sold as seen’. They are in good – very good, used condition. They have been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise their original finish has been left well alone. As you will see from our photos, there are light scuffs and marks to the wood. We would categorise this as minor wear in line with their age and function. One chair has a slightly more significant scrape on the top of its front leg – please see our photo. The green vinyl / leatherette upholstery is original and has faired remarkably well with much still to offer. There are no signs of wear or any tears to report, it’s just a little wrinkly here and there where it has lost some tautness through use. The chair frames are superbly crafted, solid and stable with no wobbles. There is no maker’s mark but these are a well-documented design, easily attributed.
