Set of Four Original Midcentury G Plan E Gomme Dining Chairs by VB Wilkins
It’s not often we acquire such an outstanding set of vintage dining chairs in near immaculate, original condition, from the fabric to the wood to the labels underneath. This quartet of E Gomme 1960s dining chairs look as if they have been preserved in a time. We can’t believe our luck. Designed by Victor B Wilkins for G Plan as part of its ever-popular Fresco range, his designs show a strong Scandinavian influence and these chairs are made in solid teak. This particular design is a rarer find, pre-dating the more common Fresco dining chair with the round seat and back pad. They have a parred-pack elegance to them with subtle curves and beautiful lines from all angles. The green wool upholstery is in fantastic order with no pulls, marks of threadbare areas – incredible for original upholstery of this age. And the finishing cloth under each chair carries the gold E Gomme stamp and the sales tickets for the store they were originally purchased from. Just very light wear and tear to the wooden frames, a testament to their superior quality.
Description
This original, vintage set of four dining chairs is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, they are in very good – excellent, used condition. The solid teak chairs frames have been thoroughly cleaned, checked and polished. They are in very good order overall. There are very minor, superficial scuffs here and there on the frames, as you might expect with furniture of this age. The original green wool upholstery is in very good order too, with no pulls, marks or areas of wear. They have plenty to offer still but should you wish to recover them at some point, it’s an easy job for the professional upholsterer or the hobbyist as they are just drop in seats. All four chairs are solid and stable with no areas of concern. As you can appreciate from our photos, these chairs are superbly crafted. Each chair carries the gold E Gomme stamp on the finishing fabric underneath.
