Rare Original 1950s Reynolds of Ludlow Walnut Bureau Desk

Here’s a rare gem of a piece, steeped in history and expertly crafted. Designed by Arthur Basil Reynolds for Reynolds of Ludlow, this is scarcely seen. It dates from the 1950s but nods to the Arts & Crafts movement in its design. It’s made in stunning, richly grained walnut to a very high specification – it’s tricky to convey in our photos how fine the wood is as so much of its glory is in how the light dances across it. Do get in touch it you’d like to see a video of it. With two lower drawers for storage, the top door drops down to create a generous writing desk and a spacious interior fitted with pigeonholes. We are selling this British heritage piece in its original condition and this is reflected in our price. You would opt to have it full or partially professionally restored. It would be worthwhile investment. Working from home isn’t so bad.

Description

This is a used, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, original condition. We have cleaned the bureau inside and out and applied a light natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise left the original finish alone, leaving any aging and wear. The two drawers are beautifully made with secure brass handles, dovetail joins and they slide with ease. They have clean, tidy interiors. The top door pulls down and this action extends two supports on either side, forming the writing desk. All hinges and mechanisms are in very good working order. The top cabinet features fixed pigeon holes inside and this section is in clean, tidy order too. As you can see when you browse our photos, the exterior wood does carry some light knocks and marks to the finish here and there. We’ve shown this in our pictures, including some superficial scratches on the top and some faint patchiness on the main door front. We have opted not to complete a restoration ourselves but you could opt have it refurbished with a professional restorer. It’s expertly made, very solid and stable. The maker’s plate can be found inside the top drawer.
