Rare Early 1960s E Gomme G Plan Chest of Drawers with Mirror

A rarity that dates from the late 1950s / early 1960s, this early G Plan chest of drawers / dressing chest was designed by E Gomme for a very short time, and you can see key features that were later developed further into other ranges, like Librenza and Tola. The mirror shape is reminiscent of the Quadrille range too. We love the dual function of this practical bedroom piece – a generous, substantial chest of drawers combined with a dressing table with a large mirror and at a height that can be sat at. The brass plate handles and feet caps give it elegance, as do the curves of the base, and although there are some age-related knocks and scuffs here and there, it’s beautifully constructed and thoughtfully designed with a high sheen, lacquered finish. A rare treat that deserves to be used and cherished for many more years to come.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned it, inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood. All four drawers slide with ease, are well-made with dovetail joints and the lower two, large drawers are clean and tidy inside. The top two drawers do have marks and stains inside – nothing unsavoury but marks that cannot be readily cleaned away. They were obviously used for make-up and toiletries. You could opt to line the drawers – please refer to our photo. The brass plate handles are securely attached and in good order. The large mirror simply slots onto two uprights screwed to the back. It can be easily angled by gently pulling the bottom forward. The mirror is in excellent order. You could opt to remove the uprights and mirror if not required. The original, high sheen, external finish has been left in tact across the top, drawer fronts and sides. There are signs of wear and tear but these are light and in line with its age. We didn’t want to complete an invasive restoration as it would’ve removed so much of its charm. The base is in good order and the feet are brass capped. Overall, the piece is solid, stable and very well-made. You can faintly see the outline of the E Gomme gold stamp in the bottom of the top drawer.
