Original Danish 1960s Cado ‘Royal’ Teak Modular Shelf System Wall Unit by Poul Cadovius

A once in a lifetime acquisition, this Danish, 1960s, Cado ‘Royal’ shelf system is a true statement, designed to make a big impact and create the ultimate feature wall. Designed by Poul Cadovius and retailed through Heal’s, London, this system is a very clever piece of engineering with the different modular elements ‘floating’ on the large teak back panels that are secured to the walls. Each piece slots into peg holes without the need for bolts or additional fittings. And this system is huge, comprising of cupboards, bookcases, glass display cabinets, a bureau writing desk and shelves. A multi-faceted, multi-functional piece for display, work and storage that you can configure to suit. Indeed, you could split it into two sections of two, or even use the panels individually. It offers much versatility as well as covering up troublesome walls. This is no ordinary listing as it’s such a large-scale item to describe and photograph but do browse our images and read the condition report. In the right house, in the right space, this would be both an iconic piece of midcentury design to own and love, and a great investment. They’re scarcely seen in the UK.

Description

This is an original, vintage modular shelf system that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned each of the individual modular elements and the four back panels, applying a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original throughout. All cupboard doors, sliding doors, hinges, closures, record dividers, pigeon holes, interior shelves and drawers are in good working order. All modular units have clean and tidy interiors and the bureau writing desk comes with a lock and key. The large back panels are screwed to the wall and as you can see from our photos, each panel has peg holes running in parallel down each side. The modular elements have pegs at the back and they simply hang in place on the back panel. You can configure the different pieces how ever you wish, and indeed you could hang the back panels independently, in pairs as well as one large feature wall using three or four of the panels. As you will see when you browse our photos there are signs of wear and tear to the exterior wood surfaces. There are knocks, chips, scratches, marks, sunlight fading… too many for us to show every single one but in the overall context of the system they are minor and they do not affect its functionality. This is a complex, very large piece to describe and show. We would strongly recommend that any prospective buyer comes and views the system assembled in all its glory to get a sense of scale, condition and how it can be configured. We have detailed the inventory and the dimensions of each component part below. The original label can be found on the back of the panels – it was original sold at Heal’s. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
