Original 1970s G Plan Form 5 Shelf Unit with Drinks Cabinet
Freestanding shelf units, such as this handsome, late 1960s / early 1970s one, are versatile pieces as they negate the need for built-in shelves. Designed by R Bennett for G Plan, as part of his popular Form 5 range that launched in 1967, he took inspiration from his Scandinavian contemporaries. And you can see that here… clean lines, midcentury simplicity, form and function. Tall but shallow, this model features an upper cupboard, an adjustable shelf, a drinks cabinet and a lower cupboard – combining lots of hidden storage with display surfaces. This unit would work well in the alcove by a chimney breast, and its unfussy, parred back design means it won’t compete with furniture from other genres or woods of different tones.
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood. The two upper cupboard doors open and close with ease with closures in good working order, and the cupboard is clean inside. There is a height-adjustable, open shelf. The central drinks cabinet features a height-adjustable shelf, and is also in good, clean order inside. The two hinges here are secure and in good working order, moving with ease. The base unit features a double, sliding door cupboard with integrated ‘hidden’ handles and the Form 5 signature design on the door mechanism. Both doors slide with ease. The upper section is designed to simply sit on top of the base unit. It’s not fixed or secured in place. However, because of the particular design of this unit with the pull-down door of the drinks cabinet adding weight to front, we would recommend securing the top section to the wall with a couple of discreet plate brackets, for peace of mind. The external wood does carry some light marks and scuffs from wear and tear, in line with its age and function, but overall this is minor. There is a very slight gap at the corner join of the bottom left hand trim. It doesn’t impact the stability of the piece in anyway but we’ve shown this is a photo. The unit is very well constructed, solid and sturdy with no signs of repair. The G Plan label can be seen inside the lower cupboard.
