Original 1960s Midcentury White & Newton Extending Teak Dining Table

A handsome, well-made, hard-working dining table that dates from the 1960s, made by reputable British manufacturer, White & Newton. Possibly our favourite of their dining tables and a rarer find, this particular model is seldom seen and there are some really unusual design features here. The striking ellipse shape of the legs, the contoured ends of the sides and the flattened side edges. It feels as if they were trying to do something edgier and more modern with the look of this table, and it works. It’s a design that look both midcentury and ‘now’. In its regular mode, it can comfortably seat four diners. Pull the two sides apart to find the hidden, integrated extension with folds out into a central section that can accommodate six people when required. The teak is in fantastic, partially restored order with rich, golden tones and patination. It would match with any style of dining chair.

Description

This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been cleaned and two table halves have been restored. This involved careful removal of the original finish, oil and then a durable, natural wax polish. There are some minor scuffs and marks to the table top and the legs, but overall this is light and superficial, in line with the table’s age and function. The two sides pull apart to reveal the extension integrated inside. With a simple rotation, this folds out and flattens. The two halves are then pushed back for a seamless table top. The mechanism and runners are all in very good working order. The extension is a touch darker than the two table halves, a common occurrence with vintage tables, quite simply it’s less used and has had less sunlight exposure. This section has the original finish on it and is in very good condition. This dining table has been well cared for. It’s very well made, solid and stable. The White & Newton label can be seen on the extending section and it dates from the 1960s.
