Large Vintage Light Oak Pedestal School Teacher’s Desk

The design and build of this large, light oak desk from the 1950s / 1960s tells us it most likely came from a school, library or education institution originally. For all that the design is rather unfussy and plain, it makes up for in character. It’s a handsome, vintage piece albeit with a few knocks and bruises over its surfaces which add to its charm and appeal in our view. It would be perfect for the home worker who requires lot of work surface for planning and organising. The proportions are generous and the storage plentiful – there are six drawers in total with two further pull-out platforms. A solid, grand piece of functional furniture that’s really well made and has a good deal to offer.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have given the desk a thorough check and clean, and applied a fresh coat of oil to the top and drawer fronts to restore its tired wood a little. There are six drawers in total, well-made in solid oak with dovetail joints, with tidy interiors and they all slide with ease. Some of the drawers are marked and stained inside and some of the drawers have removable dividers in place. There are also two pull-out platforms above each bank of drawers. Sadly we do not have the key for the locks. As you can see in our photos, there are numerous minor knocks, scuffs and marks inside and out, in line with the piece’s considerable age and ‘working’ nature. There is also a discreet repair to one of the drawer handles, as shown. It’s very well crafted, solid and stable – it’s heavy which should be noted. Unfortunately there is no maker’s mark but it is British and from a quality manufacturer.
