Category / White & Newton

White & Newton was a respected British furniture maker active during the mid-20th century, known for producing high-quality, design-led furniture during the post-war period. Based in Portsmouth, the company established a reputation for craftsmanship and modern styling at a time when British interiors were shifting toward lighter, more contemporary forms.

During the 1950s and 1960s, White & Newton became particularly associated with mid-century modern design, creating elegant dining and living room furniture in teak and other fine timbers. Their pieces were characterised by clean lines, refined proportions, and subtle detailing, often incorporating sculpted handles, gently tapered legs, and carefully finished surfaces. This approach reflected strong Scandinavian influences while maintaining a distinctly British sense of quality and restraint.

White & Newton’s furniture was often considered slightly more refined and upmarket than some mass-produced competitors, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and material quality. Sideboards, cabinets, and dining sets formed the core of their output, many of which remain highly regarded today.

As with many British manufacturers of the period, individual designers were not widely credited, and the company’s ranges are generally attributed to in-house design teams.

Today, White & Newton furniture is highly collectible, valued for its elegant simplicity, excellent construction, and its contribution to the development of British mid-century modern design.
