Category / Westnofa

Westnofa was a leading Norwegian furniture producer that gained international recognition during the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. Based in Ålesund, a region known for its strong furniture-making tradition, Westnofa specialised in high-quality lounge seating that reflected the principles of Scandinavian modern design.

The company became especially well known for its innovative armchairs and reclining chairs, many of which featured laminated bentwood frames and ergonomic forms. These designs combined comfort with striking visual appeal, often using rich leather upholstery paired with smoothly curved wooden structures. Westnofa’s pieces were widely exported, particularly to the United States, where they became synonymous with Scandinavian luxury and relaxation.

A key contributor to Westnofa’s success was designer Ingmar Relling, whose work helped define the company’s international reputation. His designs emphasised human comfort, flexibility, and modern aesthetics, and he was also responsible for the iconic Siesta chair, which became one of Norway’s most celebrated furniture designs.

Today, Westnofa furniture is highly collectible, valued for its craftsmanship, innovative use of materials, and its role in popularising Scandinavian lounge seating around the world.
