Category / Turnidge Of London

Turnidge of London was a prominent British furniture maker that gained recognition in the mid-20th century for its high-quality cabinets and bars. Based in London, the company was originally established in the early 20th century and initially produced traditional furniture. Its greatest success, however, came in the post-war decades as it adapted to changing tastes and embraced modern design.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Turnidge became especially well known for its stylish cocktail cabinets and drinks bars, which reflected the growing culture of home entertaining in Britain. These pieces often featured rich woods such as teak, rosewood, and mahogany, combined with distinctive details like mirrored interiors, glass shelving, and sculptural handles. The company’s designs balanced glamour with practicality, offering both storage and display in compact, elegant forms.

Turnidge’s mid-century ranges were influenced by both Scandinavian modernism and contemporary British design trends, resulting in clean lines softened by decorative elements. While the company did not widely publicise individual designers, its collections are believed to have been developed by in-house design teams, with some pieces showing the influence of leading British designers of the period.

Today, Turnidge furniture is highly collectible, particularly its cocktail cabinets, which are valued for their craftsmanship, distinctive style, and embodiment of mid-century domestic culture in Britain.
