Category / Stonehill

Stonehill Furniture was a prominent British furniture maker active during the mid-20th century, particularly known for its stylish and accessible modern designs. Based in London, the company became widely recognised in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the growing movement toward contemporary furniture in post-war Britain.

Stonehill gained popularity for its well-designed living and dining room furniture, often produced in teak and other fashionable timbers. Its pieces were characterised by clean lines, elegant proportions, and distinctive detailing such as sculpted drawer handles, sliding doors, and contrasting wood finishes. These features reflected strong Scandinavian influences while maintaining a practical, British approach to everyday furniture.

One of Stonehill’s most recognisable contributions was its range of sideboards and cabinets, many of which combined visual sophistication with functional storage. The company successfully balanced affordability with style, making modern design accessible to a wide audience during a period of expanding home ownership.

Unlike some contemporaries, Stonehill did not prominently promote individual designers, and most of its mid-century ranges are attributed to in-house design teams. Nevertheless, the consistency and originality of its output suggest a clear and confident design direction.

Today, Stonehill furniture is highly collectible, valued for its craftsmanship, distinctive mid-century aesthetic, and its role in shaping modern British interiors.
