Category / Morris Of Glasgow

Morris of Glasgow was one of Scotland’s most important furniture makers, founded in 1884 by Glasgow cabinetmaker Hugh Morris in Glasgow. Initially producing traditional handcrafted furniture, the company gained a strong reputation for quality and reliability, supplying both domestic and contract markets.

Its most significant period came in the post-war decades, when Morris of Glasgow embraced modern design and became a key contributor to Britain’s mid-century furniture movement. During the 1950s and 1960s, the company produced a wide range of teak and hardwood furniture, including sideboards, dining sets, and bedroom suites. These pieces reflected Scandinavian influences, with clean lines, sculptural handles, and carefully considered proportions, while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.

A central figure in this transition was Neil Morris, who served as head of design and helped define the company’s modern identity. Under his direction, Morris of Glasgow introduced a number of successful ranges that combined elegance with practicality, appealing to the growing post-war consumer market.

Although the company declined in the later 20th century, its mid-century furniture remains highly regarded. Today, Morris of Glasgow pieces are valued for their design integrity, craftsmanship, and role in shaping British modern interiors.
