Midcentury 1960s Desk / Dressing Table by Gunther Hoffstead for Uniflex

Use as a desk, use as a dressing table, this fine piece dates from the 1960s and was made by British maker, Uniflex, designed by Gunther Hoffstead. Hoffstead joined Uniflex in the early 1960s, bringing with him from Germany, a modernist, minimalist design eye. Compared to the likes of G Plan, Ercol and McKintosh, Uniflex’s output was small volume and less mainstream, staying true to creating stylish domestic pieces that were simple, clean and ultra pared-back. Considered pretty cutting edge at the time, Uniflex pieces just don’t come around these days. There are some classic Hoffstead design elements here – the trapeze-style legs; the clever, cut-away drawer pulls on the outer middle drawers; the flat, uninterrupted surfaces. It has all his design hallmarks. As a pedestal desk, there is a great deal of storage, a generous knee hole for your office chair and an expansive desk top. As a dressing table, there are three mirrors that can be angled to get your look on point.

Full Condition Report
This is an original, vintage dressing table / desk that is ‘sold as seen’. We have checked and thoroughly cleaned the piece inside and out, and we have revived the external surfaces with a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is all original. It’s in amazing condition, given its age. There are seven drawers in total and the central drawer has removable dividers. All drawers are very nicely constructed as you’d expect from Uniflex. They have clean interiors and slide easily. There are light knocks, nips, scuffs and blemishes to the wood here and there which can be seen across our photos. Overall this is minor. The three, metal framed mirrors are hung onto two uprights which bolt into the back of the many piece, increasing the piece’s depth. The large, main mirror has a bottom catch on the back to enable it to be angled. Originally there was a light set on top of this mirror. We removed this as it was broken and there is a mark left behind but doesn’t show as it’s on the back. It is stable and solid, a very well-made piece with no areas of concern. The maker’s mark can be found inside the middle drawer. Please browse our photos for an accurate account of this sideboard. Any queries, do get in touch.
