Large Vintage 1960s British Teak Glazed Bookcase

An unfussy, vintage, glass-fronted bookcase, most likely by British maker, Herbert Gibbs, and dating from the 1960s / early 1970s. Split centrally into two sides, there are three adjustable shelves so it can be configured to your needs, perhaps with books in one section and treasures in the other. The generous width that can accommodate a great deal but shallow depth make this a light footprint storage option that won’t intrude into the room. But what we really love is the subtle note of distinction on the glass doors. Have you noticed the cut-out curved ‘handles’ to slide the doors back and forth? When fully closed, they create an hour glass motif in the middle. A small thing but a super design detail that elevate this piece from the ordinary. Simply designed but very well-made.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in good – very good, used condition. The piece has been checked and serviced, cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the exterior wood surfaces to revive its shine but otherwise the finish is original, therefore there are light signs of use. The bookcase is centrally divided into two sections, each with a thick sliding glass door with curved handles. The glass is in very good order and the doors slide back and forth easily in the runners. The interior is clean and tidy with minor signs of wear. There are three adjustable shelves in total which you can configure in either side as you wish. There are light signs of wear and tear to the exterior wood, just the odd superficial mark and scuff in line with what we might expect to see on a vintage item. It’s very well made with no signs of repair or areas of concern. It’s stable and solid, a heavy substantial piece. There is sadly no maker’s mark. It could be Herbert Gibbs as so many of these vintage glazed bookcases are but we cannot be sure. Do browse our images for a good sense of its colour and condition.
