Rare Midcentury 1960s Walnut & Beech Dressing Table / Sideboard

This outstanding vintage dressing table / sideboard is an enigmatic beauty that has had us scratching our heads. It’s of an exceptional quality both in terms of design and craftsmanship, it’s date stamped ‘MAY 1960’ on the back so a midcentury original but despite it’s highly distinctive look, we’ve been unable to attribute it. We conclude it’s a rare and precious find. The wood here is glorious. We believe a mix of walnut and beech on a dark afromosia base. The richly marked grain particularly across the front is exquisite. We love too the inlaid stripes on the outer doors. Intended as a dressing table with its large generous mirror, this can be easily removed along with its mounts so the piece can serve as a handsome sideboard. With five drawers in total and two generous cupboards at either side, there is plentiful storage here, along with an expansive but-not-too-wide table top. Certainly one of a kind and a true original.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall good – very good, used condition. It has been checked and cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the exterior wood but otherwise the finish is original. It’s a expertly crafted piece in fantastic condition, given its considerable years -it’s date stamped ‘May 1960’ on the back. All five drawers (two large, deep central drawers and three slim, upper drawers) are in good, tidy order internally, with just minimal marks inside from use, and they slide with ease. They are well-made with dovetail joints and have securely attached, original metal handles. There are two further cupboards on each side, each with a fixed shelf inside. Again, the interiors are in good, clean order, with handles securely fixed and closures and hinges in good working order. The exterior wood is in good – very good condition with just a handful of very light scuffs and minor blemishes. These are primarily on the top surface, as you might expect but in the overall context of the piece they aren’t very noticeable at all. Please browse our photos. The large mirror hangs two uprights which screw in at the back. The lower hinged arm that’s usually at the base of the mirror at the back isn’t in place anymore so the mirror cannot be angled. The mirror itself is in good order with just very minor signs of ageing on the reflective surface. The mirror can be easily removed if you would like to use this piece as a sideboard – the mirror simply lifts off and the uprights are easily unscrewed. The chair and props shown are not included. Do look through our photos for an accurate account of this fine piece. It’s stable and solid with no areas of concern.
