Set of Four Midcentury ‘Volnay’ Dining Chairs by John Herbert for A Younger – New Upholstery

A Younger Ltd was a British midcentury leader throughout the 1950s-1960s, producing low volume, high-end pieces, often retailed through Heals. In collaboration with John Herbert, it was one of the first to be influenced by its Scandinavian contemporaries and that shows in the design of these chairs. Herbert worked with Younger for many years producing several ranges of domestic furniture including his popular ‘Volnay’ collection which these chairs were part of. Crafted in dark, solid afromosia, these are substantial, supportive chairs, giving much comfort with their contoured backs and generous seat widths. This set includes one carver chair for the head of the table. We have upholstered the seat pads with a smart, charcoal grey, marl pure wool, a sophisticated, contemporary look for these fine midcentury chairs.

Description

This set of four original, vintage chairs is ‘sold as seen’ and is comprised of three regular dining chairs and one carver. They are in very good, used condition. The frames have been checked, cleaned and a neutral beeswax polish applied to their wood but otherwise the finish is original. The finish across the chair frames does carry very minor, superficial scuffs and marks here and there but nothing to call out. This wear and tear is light and in line with their considerable age. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of this. The seat pads have been professionally reupholstered with a charcoal grey, Melton wool that’s thick, hardwearing and neutral. The chairs are solid and sturdy with no wobbles. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in longer place but it’s a well-documented design so we attribute it with confidence to A Younger. Alternatively, we can arrange fast, UK mainland delivery with trusted delivery partners who cover most of the country (enquire for Scotland or remote addresses) and are reliable and insured. We have a weekly collection and onward delivery usually follows 1-5 days later. The delivery service we can offer does require a little flexibility as the drivers work to predetermined routes with other delivery obligations, but you would be kept updated.
