Antique Early 19th Century Regency Mahogany Bureau

Our oldest ever piece at OHW and goodness, what a piece! This dates from the Regency period (so around the early 1800s) and as such, it’s seen a tremendous amount of life and use across the decades and centuries. Constructed in mahogany, it’s substantial and grand with its original brass plate handles in place. Below are four graduated drawers and at the top, two arms pull out on either side and the fall door rests on these arms to create the generous desktop. Inside are further miniature drawers and pigeon holes for storage. Yes, it comes with knocks, bruises, blemishes and a smattering of historical woodworm holes… but none of this detracts from the appeal of this extraordinarily old, splendid antique piece. It has masses with bags of character and charm, and its scars are part of its rich history and story.

Description

This original, antique piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in fair – good, used condition, in line with its considerable age and purpose. It has been checked and cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish has been applied to the external wood but otherwise the original finish has been left alone and as such it comes with significant bruises and scars. The four drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and have clean interiors. One of the drawers was lined at some point in the early 20th century with newspaper and here are some small remnants left. The brass handles are original and securely attached. Two arms extend on either side and the top fall door opens to rest on these and form the desk. All hinges and mechanisms are in good working order. The desktop is quite heavily scuffed and worn from use, as shown. There are four miniature drawers in the top section, one of which has a replacement pull handle as shown. Sadly we do not have a key for the locks. As you can appreciate from our photos, the exterior does carry many knocks, scuffs and marks commensurate with its age and purpose, including some historical woodworm holes on the right hand side (they have long gone but their ‘work’ remains). We don’t feel the wear and tear detracts from its appeal or function in any way, in fact it adds to its story and history, but do browse our photos. It’s well made, solid and stable including when the pull-down desk in place. Sadly there is no maker’s stamp but it’s British in original and dated at the point of acquisition from a reputable auction house. Questions or wish to view? Just get in touch.
