Vintage 1970s Danish Leather Lounge Chair by Georg Thams for Grant Møbelfabrik

A grand, classic, Scandi lounge chair, this handsome midcentury Danish seat is a generous, inviting sit with indulgent proportions. Attributed to Georg Thams, it’s a piece he designed in collaboration with Grant Møbelfabrik in the first half of the seventies. In its original mid-brown leather, the upholstery is lived in, rugged and hard-wearing, getting more characterful and better with age and use. We love the gentle contours of the sides and arms which soften what might otherwise be a boxy, austere silhouette. It sits on a rosewood base which complements the leather tones perfectly. Comfort is a tricky thing to describe as its so subjective but we would say this has a medium firm feel.

Description

This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. The wooden rosewood frame has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied to revive its shine but otherwise the finish is original. The leather upholstery is original. There are four cushions in total, all of which are in good order, although it should be noted that the zip of the seat cushion has broken at some point and the seam sewn shut – please refer to our photo. Obviously as it’s on the underside it doesn’t show and there is the option to replace the missing zip with a professional upholsterer. The other cushions have working zips and all inners are plump and in good order, as is the backing cloth. The fixed leather upholstery on the frame is also in good order, hugging the contours of the frame tightly. There are wrinkles, marks and scuffs here and there across the fixed leather and cushions which can be seen across our various photos. This is primarily on the chair’s corners / edges. This doesn’t jar with us as it’s very much part of its vintage, lived-in appeal in our view but do browse our photos. The finishing fabric underneath the seat cushion is in good condition too. The lower wooden frame carries some very light knocks and surface scuffs. It was imported directly from Denmark and it dates from the early 1970s. Although there is no maker’s label, it is a well-documented design.
