Danish 1960s ‘Floating’ Modular CADO Shelf System Wall Unit by Poul Cadovius

This iconic Cado wall system is a true statement piece, a midcentury classic. Designed by Danish designer, Poul Cadovius, and retailed through Heal’s, London, this system is a very clever piece of engineering with the different modular elements ‘floating’ on two tall teak uprights that are secured directly to the wall. Each piece hangs on either pegs or arms without the need for bolts or additional fittings. This set up would make a super stylish work-station for the homeworker with a fall-door bureau, cabinet and two shelves. Ideal if you perhaps don’t have room for a conventional desk. Equally though, the bureau can serve as a drinks cabinet. A multi-faceted, multi-functional piece for display, work and storage that you can configure to suit. Created to make a bold visual impact and exemplifying the ‘form and function’ MCM aesthetic.

Description

This is an original, vintage modular shelf system that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have checked and thoroughly cleaned each of the individual modular elements, applying a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original throughout. The full inventory for this modular shelving system is:

The sliding doors of the upper cabinet are in very good working order, moving with ease in their runners. There are fixed vertical dividers on one side and the interior is very clean and tidy. The bureau is in very good order too with just minor signs of age and use. The fall door creates the desk and comes with a working lock and key. Inside are fixed pigeon holes for storage. The interior is in good, clean order. The two shelves are also in tip top condition. They fix to the uprights with metal brackets as shown. There are just light marks and blemishes to the exterior wood surfaces. The two uprights have a few knocks and scuffs here and there but nothing to flag or anything very noticeable. Please do browse through our photos. The two uprights screw directly into the wall – we do not supply screws as this is dependent on the wall / surface you plan to screw the uprights into. The shelf brackets slot into holes on the uprights with additional small shelf pegs supporting at the bottom. The two cabinets – the cabinet and bureau – simply hang on larger metal rods. You can configure the different pieces how ever you wish. We have detailed the inventory and the dimensions of each component part above and the overall height would depend on how high you screw in the uprights. Sadly there is no CADO label affixed to the back of the cabinets anymore, but it was acquired with a number of other CADO systems pieces so we attribute it with confidence.
