Midcentury Military Oak Chest of Drawers by Enham

Made by Enham Furniture, who were contracted to make furniture for the British Forces, this piece dates specifically from 1959. We know this because the date and military stamp are clearly visible on the back. This chest of drawers is an MOD piece, commissioned originally for military accommodation and barracks. The design is rather utilitarian and unfussy but this doesn’t mean it’s without character and its neutral look is to its credit – it will slot easily into a room without clashing with other furniture and styles. The build quality is, as you might expect, to a very high standard. It was made to last, robust and sturdy, crafted for high use. With a two-over-three drawer configuration it provides a huge amount of storage space. It has undergone a careful and thorough restoration so the golden oak really glows but without stripping away all its history and character. A cracking vintage piece with a great back story.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside, and the exterior surfaces have been fully restored, a process that involved chemically stripping away the original finish (gentler than sanding ensuring the vintage character of the piece isn’t removed entirely), followed by layers of oil and then wax polish for a durable, consistent finish. It has a two over three drawer configuration. The drawers are really well-made with dovetail joints, they slide easily and have clean, tidy interiors. The handles are original and are securely attached. There are some minor knocks and blemishes here and there which can be seen across our photos, just light wear and tear in line with its age. The Enham military stamp and date 1959 are clearly visible on the back. This is a very well made, midcentury piece in solid oak.
