These midcentury, glass-door bookcase cabinets are really useful, non-fixed storage solutions for things you might want on display – favourite books, ceramics, trinkets and treasures – but with a generous cupboard to one side for items you’d prefer to have stowed away. Slender in depth at just 26cm, it doesn’t jut out into the room. It can sit discreetly against the wall or behind another piece of furniture like a chair or sofa. We love the golden wood of this particular piece by Criterion of Charing Cross, most likely beech. It dates from the 1960s but its neutral design will mix easily with furniture, homeware and styles from different periods. Although at a glance a simple piece of furniture, it’s well-crafted with adjustable shelves.
