Vintage Turnidge of London Shelf Unit & Bookcase Mirrored Cabinet

Made by British manufacturer, Turnidge of London, in the early 1970s, this is an unusual, freestanding piece. Tall and shallow, it will tuck into a nook or alcove with ease and it’s the perfect cabinet for showcasing precious treasures and trinkets with a top section of glass-fronted, mirror-backed display shelves. Down below is a generous drawer and cupboard with a pull-down door. This also features a mirrored back and, coming from Turnidge, was no doubt designed to house your drinks collection with a mixing area at the front – they were most renowned for making wonderful home cocktail cabinets and bars. A really well-made piece that’s got masses of retro charm but this doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to find a midcentury-themed home. Its design and wood tone is actually fairly neutral and unassuming so it will slot in alongside older or more modern furniture.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have cleaned the piece inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to the external surfaces. The lower drawer slides with ease and is clean and tidy inside. The drop-down cabinet features a mirrored back and is also clean and tidy inside with the hinges and closures in good order. The top section features two glass sliding doors which move with ease in their runners. There is a glass shelf and a mirrored back inside. There are scuffs and marks on the external wood, primarily on the top surface and sides, including some small veneer chips at the lower edges. Please refer to our photos. It’s stable and solid, well-made and with no signs of repair, and most likely dates from the early 1970s. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in place but we know this to be a well-documented Turnidge of London piece with their signature round handles.
