Vintage Ercol Model 473 Chairmaker’s Rocking Chair

A grand rocking version of Ercol’s design classic, the ‘Model 472 chairmaker’s chair’, so called because it showcased the very best of Ercol’s exemplary chairmaking craftsmanship in one piece. Using their favoured combination of elm for the oyster-shaped seat and beech for the back, spindles and legs, its complex design is expertly crafted. It came into production in the 1962 and continued into the eighties with modifications along the way. This particular chair in Ercol’s dark factory finish dates from the late 1970s / early 1980s and is characterised by the central back splat and the multiple spindles which continue round under the slim, upturned arms. The proportions are tall, enveloping and generous, making it a really comfortable seat, perhaps by the fire, in a reading corner or in the conservatory. Originally there would have been a shaped seat and back cushion which you can still have custom made to fit but for a more contemporary look, style with small cushions or a throw. A British midcentury classic and the ultimate, indulgent rocking chair.

Description

This is an original, vintage rocking chair that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the chair, applying a natural beeswax polish to restore its shine but have otherwise left the original finish alone. There are minor marks and scuffs here and there but as you can appreciate from our photos, they are minimal, especially in the context of the overall piece. As you might expect the main wear and tear is on the arm ends. We have accurately represented the chair in our photos. The chair has the original poppers in place at the back and under the seat, should you choose to add Ercol cushions at some point. If you plan to not have cushions or fixed cushion pads, the poppers can be easily unscrewed.  As you would expect from Ercol, it’s superbly constructed in solid elm and beech. The gold Ercol sticker can be found underneath dating to the early 1980s.
