Vintage Scandinavian Large Brown Leather Bentwood ‘Bucket’ Chair

Here’s a lounge chair that you will be reluctant to leave once you’ve given it a try! Super loungy, super comfortable and super slouchy, everything you could want from a favourite chair. We see lots of Scandinavian bentwoods but never before a chair like this. Its proportions are over-sized and enveloping, sitting within a dark bentwood frame and comprised of a heavy canvas ‘bucket’ seat with the soft leather cushion on top.  The sectioned leather cushion is moored in place with large buttons around its edges. We’ve had no joy figuring out the maker – it could be Norwegian or could be Danish. As is the way with vintage leather, it comes with lived in, rugged good looks but that’s part of its charm too. An unusual and particularly handsome midcentury leather bentwood chair, it will mix in with other seating or look splendid as a standalone piece.

Description

This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good, used condition. We have washed the leather upholstery and applied a nourishing leather balm, and we have applied a natural beeswax polish to the bent plywood frame. The single sectioned leather cushion is held in position with large visible buttons and Velcro. The leather upholstery is soft and supple with no tears or notable patches of wear. The inners are most likely feather which create that slouchy look. As you can see from our photos the leather is wrinkled and ‘lived in’. All the buttons are secure. There is a small blemish with a faint tidemark on right hand side of the main back cushion – please see our picture. It’s not particularly noticeable – only in certain lights do you spot it. The finishing canvas underneath the cushion that creates the seat is sunlight faded on the back and there is a small area of wear at the back top. Again, please browse our photos to see this. There are no areas of concern though and given the chair’s age it’s in very good order. The bentwood frame itself is solid and stable with no wobbles or joint concerns. There are some small dents across the lower joist at the back – we suspect chew-marks from a dog. It’s a very well-made piece and very good order. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we’ve imported this chair directly from Denmark and we believe it dates from the late 1960s / early 1970s.
