Vintage 1970s Danish Leather Two Seat Sofa by Georg Thams for Grant Møbelfabrik

Here’s a classic, midcentury Danish two seater sofa that’s unfussy, super stylish and looks great from all angles. Attributed to Georg Thams, it’s a piece he designed in collaboration with Grant Møbelfabrik in the first half of the seventies. In its original mid-brown leather, the upholstery is lived in, rugged and hard-wearing, getting more characterful and better with age and use. We love the gentle contours of the sides and arms which soften what might otherwise be a boxy, austere silhouette. It sits on a rosewood base which complements the leather tones perfectly. Comfort is a tricky thing to describe as its so subjective but we would say this has a medium firm feel.

We have the accompanying lounge chair for this sofa too and the pair can be purchased at a discounted rate. See the separate listing.

Description

This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. The wooden rosewood frame has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied to revive its shine but otherwise the finish is original. The leather upholstery is original too. There are six cushions in total, all with working zips, plump inner cushions and backing cloth in good – very good order. The cushion leather is wrinkled and lightly scrunched with use, as we’ve shown, but very much as we would expect with vintage sofa of this age. The fixed leather upholstery on the frame is also in good order, hugging the contours of the sofa frame well. Again, there are wrinkles, marks and scuffs here and there across the fixed leather which can be seen across our various photos. This is primarily on the chair’s corners / edges / tops and there is a blemish on one end which we’ve flagged in our photos.  Overall marks, scuffs and wrinkles are very much part of its vintage, lived-in appeal in our view but do browse our photos. The finishing fabric underneath the cushions is in good condition too with some light tide marks underneath the end cushions as shown. The lower wooden frame carries some very light knocks and surface scuffs. It was imported directly from Denmark and it dates from the early 1970s. Although there is no maker’s label, it is a well-documented design. Do browse our numerous photos for an accurate sense of its colour and order. If you would like to view the sofa or have any questions at all, please do get in touch.
