Mid Century 1960s Extending ‘Fonseca’ Dining Table by John Herbert for A Younger

A rather special extending dining table, designed by John Herbert in the 1960s for A Younger furniture, as part of his Fonseca range. Made from afrosmosia and teak to give that subtle tone distinction between the solid legs and the table top, its build is of a high quality. Two draw leaves sit beneath the main table top. Pulled from either side, you can either partially or fully extend the dining surface so there are three width modes. A Younger Ltd were British midcentury leaders in the 1950s and 1960s, producing low volume, high-end pieces, more often than not retailed through Heals. It was one of the first to be influenced its Scandinavian contemporaries and you can see this in the design of this table, where clean, crisp lines are softened with curves. We love how the legs seem to pour down from the table top.

Description

This is an original, vintage table that is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned this piece and the main table top has been restored so a partial refurbishment. This involved chemically stripping the original finish (rather than sanding which can cause veneer damage) on the table top, followed by oil and wax for a durable, consistent finish. The two leaves, table border / base and legs have been cleaned and buffed with a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original here. The two drop leaves are accessed at either end of the table. The main table top is lifted slightly and the extensions can be gently pulled out from underneath. You have the option to use one or both. This table can seat 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 depending on the size of your dining chairs. The leaves are in very good order, moving freely and with ease. As is often the case, the leaves are darker than the main table top and this is quite simply because they have been stowed away and not exposed to sunlight and used as much as the main surface. There are minor scuffs, blemishes and knocks here and there – this is taken into account with our price and is shown across our photos. This very fine vintage table in overall good order with wear as we would expect with a piece of this age. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in longer place but it’s a well-documented design so we attribute it with confidence to A Younger.
