Vintage 1960s Austinsuite Compact Teak Sideboard

Most conventional vintage sideboards are long and can be tricky pieces for modern homes to accommodate, demanding a large expanse of wall space. This compact sideboard, however, has neat, leaner proportions and would be a practical and handsome addition to any interior. Sitting on long, tapered legs it has a lightness and elegance to its form but at the same time offers lots of useful storage. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we believe this to have been made by Austinsuite in the 1960s, possibly designed by Frank Guille. His later pieces for Austinsuite feature exactly the same integrated handle design and other design details we’ve spotted here. Furthermore, it’s a really well-crafted piece, made with great thought and care.

Description

This is an original, vintage sideboard that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in very good, used condition. We have cleaned it and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood but nothing more as it’s in such great shape. All six drawers are made with dovetail joints, the interior wood is in good, clean order (the top right drawer is the most marked with use but it’s minor – please see our photo) and they all slide with ease. There are some very minor scratches and scuffs to the exterior wood as you would anticipate with a vintage piece of this age. On the top surface there is some sun fading to the wood at the back. It’s not particularly noticeable, especially as most people would use this surface. Please refer to our photos. It’s a really well-made, practical piece of storage furniture that’s solidly constructed with no signs of repair. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer affixed, but it’s British made and in our experience, we are confident it’s an early Austinsuite sideboard, dating from the 1960s.
