Vintage 1950s Vanson Teak Sideboard by Peter Hayward

Designed by Peter Hayward in the 1950s for British furniture maker,  Vanson, this is one of the all-time British sideboard greats in our view. It comes in cracking, restored condition and has lots to offer, not least masses of helpful storage. Aside from its practical function, there’s so much design detail to love… from the gently curved top surface, the unusual angle of the legs, the beautiful wood patination and the elegant brass handles. It’s been lovingly and thoughtfully designed. It’s proportions are unusual too, sitting higher than a regular sideboard but not quite as wide. This is one of those rare pieces of furniture that straddles the more traditional post-war style with the emerging Scandinavian-inspired midcentury design aesthetic of the mid-century. And that makes the appeal of this sideboard even greater as it would work well in any modern interior, whether that be farmhouse, minimalist / maximalist, mid-century, bohemian, or a mixed style home.

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good – excellent, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned it, inside and out, fully restoring the top surface. It was carefully sanded back to remove the original tarnished finish, and then layers of a hard-wearing, Osmo wax oil have been applied, with a final polish to give a beautiful, durable result. The interior wood is clean, tidy and in good order. All three drawers slide with ease and are well-made. The top drawer is sectioned and felt-lined , and features an additional removeable lined cutlery tray. The cabinet doors move with ease and their closures are in good order. They both feature a fixed  shelf. There are very minor knocks and scuffs here and there to the exterior wood, mainly on the legs, but this is in line with its considerable years, but as you can appreciate from our pictures, these are light and don’t detract from the appeal of the sideboard in any way. It’s a very well made piece from a renowned designer and furniture maker and comes with with no visible repairs or construction concerns. The Vanson label can be seen inside the drawer.
