Vintage 1950s Stag C Range Walnut Wardrobe by John & Sylvia Reid

It’s not often we acquire wardrobes (mainly because of their weight!) but this particular one was too good to miss. Designed by power duo, John and Sylvia Reid for Stag in the 1950s, this is from their highly regarded C range but in Australian walnut rather than the more commonly seen light oak. The rich, dark grain is so striking across its large expansive exterior surfaces. The overall design is refined, clean-lined and minimalist, looking both vintage and contemporary at the same time. We love the black trim framing the front. It creates a subtle note of distinction. Plentiful storage inside with a rail and fixed upper shelf. The full length side mirror carries some minor age spots but nothing that hampers its function. This is a super piece of timeless, midcentury design with great provenance that will mix and match with other furniture. We have an accompanying chest of drawers and dressing table available. Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have cleaned the piece inside and out, and exterior surfaces have been restored. This involved carefully stripping back the original finish, oil and then wax polish. We have also sprayed the trim to restore it to its original matt black glory. The wardrobe interior features a full-width fixed shelf and a hanging rail. The hanging rail is a little scarred with use but perfectly functional – please see our photo. The interior is in good, clean and tidy order. The door open with a discreet push button and then pull to open. The closure and hinges are in very good, working order. The exterior surfaces are in good order, following their restoration, but there are light signs of wear and tear in line with the item’s considerable age and as you would expect, including some sunlight fading on one side. There is a scuff on the bottom corner of the door and also the bottom right hand corner – both of these are shown in our photos. The mirror has some minor age spots but nothing that compromises its effectiveness. It’s a well-made, solid and sturdy piece. Originally it sat on short, tapered legs which have been removed at some point. This is reflected in our price.
