Vintage 1950s C Range Oak Compactum Gentleman’s Wardrobe by Stag

Ahead of its time, this is one of those vintage pieces that looks both midcentury and contemporary. Designed by power couple, John and Sylvia Reid for Stag in the 1950s, this super compactum wardrobe is from their C (Cumberland) range. It has all the functionality of a regular wardrobe but in miniature, compact form… hanging rail, storage holes, even a cufflink tray. It’s ideal for a child’s room or a small bedroom with its space-saving proportions. The light oak makes a refreshing change from the usual midcentury teak and as such creates a lighter, less bulky looking piece of functional furniture. We love too that it sits on neat tapered legs, again creating space around it. The look is minimalist and sleek, executed to a high standard, as you would expect from Stag.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside, and the exterior surfaces have been fully restored, a process that involved chemically stripping away the original finish (gentler than sanding ensuring the vintage character of the piece isn’t removed entirely), followed by layers of oil and then wax polish for a durable, consistent finish. The doors open and close with ease with all hinges and closures are in good, working order. Inside are open cubby holes for storage, a hanging rail and cufflink tray mounted on the inside of the door. The interior is in very good order with just light signs of use and clean, tidy surfaces throughout. Some faint blemishes remain on the exterior, despite restoration. With a piece of this nature great care has to be taken to not breach the veneer so it’s been restored and taken back as much as we safely could. A careful and considered renovation. Whilst the marks can be seen on the front door and on the top, in the overall context of the piece they are not hugely noticeable. Plus this is a piece that’s over 70 years old so it will carry signs of use and aging. It’s really well-made, solid and stable. The Stag label is in place inside the door.
