Vintage 1940s Extending English Oak Desk with Drawers

Here’s a traditional, compact vintage desk that’s a real, old charmer. Made in English oak, it dates from the forties, probably post-war, possibly made for a school, so it carries a few of life’s scars and knocks on its surfaces but it’s a superbly well-built piece made so has a great deal to offer. Besides, this wear and tear is very much part of its history and character. It has compact proportions but comes with the added option to extend the desktop, handily increasing the surface area when required. It comes with three drawers, a working lock and key, and a further writing platform above them. It would be ideal for a student or a small home office space.

Description

This is an original, vintage desk that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked, cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original and as such comes with blemishes and signs of use. The three drawers slide with ease, are well-made with dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors with light signs of use inside. There is a working lock and key. The handles are securely attached and there is a pull-out writing platform above the drawers. The desk is extended on the left hand side by a metal joint underneath. All hinges and mechanisms are in good, working order. The exterior surfaces carry knocks, blemishes and signs of ageing as you would expect with a piece of this nature and age. Do refer to our photos for a accurate sense of its order. Overall, we feel the wear is part of its unique character and history. It’s well-crafted, solid and stable, British in origin and dating from the 1940s. There is no maker’s mark but we believe it’s most likely made by Abbess.
